Next Steps Planning I
After the morning conversation the participants were given an assignment that focused on planning next steps in a number of specific focus areas. The documentation below consists of the assignment given to each group, a photograph of their white wall and their poster board if they made one. The students working with us were able to capture short video presentations for most of the groups and those are also accessible below (a few of the cameras malfunctioned and we lost a couple of the videos). Context
This round of work is focused on bringing the work we’ve done so far into perspective and planning the next steps. Imagine it is 2011 and we’ve been at this for more than four years. Each community and school has evolved over this time and we have achieved our goals to:
- Maintain a school in every community
- Maintain a quality education program for all students
- Operate in the most cost efficient manner possible
Objective
The objective for your group is to develop a vision of what the communities and schools look like in three years (2011) specific to online classes, and college credit courses (partnerships). Use the following questions to help you develop your vision:
- What are the major milestones we’ve achieved relative to distance learning, online classes, and college credit courses (partnerships)?
- What does each school look like at this time (2011)?
- What happened, when – to get us to where we are now (relative to distance learning, online classes and key partnerships?
Process
Find your group and your breakout area. Look back from 2011 and describe in detail what we have accomplished, what we look like, and what we are doing now (in 2011). Use the white wall and markers provided to brainstorm your vision and answers the questions above. Use words and images to produce your vision.

Group 4: Organizational Models
Context
This round of work is focused on bringing the work we’ve done so far into perspective and planning the next steps. Your group will focus on the various organizational models being explored for the four communities. Remember the goals of the Boards are to:
- Maintain a school in every community
- Maintain a quality education program for all students
- Operate in the most cost efficient manner possible
Objective
The objective for your group is to develop a presentation that explains the various organizational models that are options for the four schools/communities. Develop a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each model. Your final product is a plus, minus, interesting diagram for each organizational model. For each model answer the following questions:
• What’s positive?
• What’s negative?
• What’s interesting?

- Operate in the most cost efficient manner possible

The objective for your group is to develop a timeline with key milestones that shows what will happen and when if we adapt a middle school model for the four communities.
- List the key activities that will happen over the next three years as we move to a middle school model in all four communities?
- When will each key activity happen?
- What obstacles need to be overcome to be successful with this transition?
- Include in your plan options for overcoming these obstacles.
